Mastering the Marathon: Time-Efficient Training Secrets for the 40-Plus Athlete Copertina flessibile – 1 settembre 2010
Opzioni di acquisto e componenti aggiuntivi
The ideal resource for forty-plus athletes who seek faster times and fewer injuries
More than half a million Americans, and millions more worldwide, attempt a marathon every year. Around half are forty years old or older?athletes whose passion increasingly turns to frustration as they mature: slower finishing times and more injuries. And yet, until now, there has been no book specifically for this audience. In Mastering the Marathon, champion forty-plus endurance athlete and trainer Don Fink sets forth programs for anyone over forty?and for those who enter the sport after turning forty?to prove that the challenge of a marathon is not too difficult, that the dream is not impossible.
Setting out from the premise that the training methods that work for younger athletes no longer work for the same athletes in their forties, fifties, and sixties, Fink presents exciting new training methods and step-by-step action plans that result in faster times, fewer injuries, and more enjoyment for the forty-plus marathoner. Including photos and profiles of successful older athletes, Mastering the Marathon also provides an illustrated exercise program for core and functional strength, ways to avoid common training and racing mistakes, recovery methods unique to forty-plus athletes, secrets to staying injury-free, and much more.
Praise for author’s previous book, Be IronFit
?Most how-to books are too technical or too shallow. Don Fink manages to pen a unique combination of information, anecdotes, and readability.” ?Scott Tinley, two-time Ironman World Champion

5,0 su 5 stelle Smart, Comprehensive Guide to Marathon Training as a Master Runner
"Mastering the Marathon" is a thorough, well-organized book with many tips even an experienced runner can benefit from. I especially enjoyed the flexibility of types of cross-training that can be incorporated into a marathon training plan as well as the emphasis on strength training. No stone was left unturned and, as I near the end of my training, I feel better-prepared for my upcoming marathon than I ever was for the marathons I ran years ago. Following the training plan outlined in the book has gotten me to a place where I think it's a realistic goal to beat my times from over 25 years ago! Grateful a friend recommended this book to me!

5,0 su 5 stelle Less is more
Unlike many books on marathon training, this one, by Don Fink, is relatively simple to understand. His main tenet is that once older, less running is better for you, but the quality of the 3 core sessions must be high. Between times different types of exercises can enhance running, this helping to prevent injury and increasing core strength.
I have learnt that as I get older, to run more than 40 miles a week takes on a 'brutal' feel, especially as I near 60. Don Fink sets out various ways to implement his training regimes, but also gives plenty of room for a reader to bespoke a programme to suit requirements.
If I had a criticism, the veteran runners he tends to champion are in their 40s - this means those in their later decades may need to extrapolate the writer's meanings to a greater degree. However, there is enough here for an experienced amateur to improve performances across the board. A good addition to the veteran runner's library.

4,0 su 5 stelle Great plan for triathletes
I used this book to run my first marathon. There's lots of good information but the main thing you'd buy it for is the plans. I chose to run 4 days a week and cycle 2 plus swim once and I felt very well prepared for my race.
During the training I ran PR's at 10km and 21.1km races and felt very strong. The marathon pace runs are tough but these definitely get you ready for the big one!
